Owner Spotlight: Sarah Barrie

I’m Sarah Barrie, proud owner of Farm Food.

I look forward to sharing my story and hope that you will enjoy getting to know me better.

I grew up on a farm west of Cambridge, Ontario in North Dumfries Township. I attended college at the University of Guelph, where I obtained an Honors degree in Environmental Science.

On completing college, I worked for a consulting company as an environmental scientist. However, I pursued my love for cooking and attended culinary school at Liaison College in Kitchener. I then worked in a restaurant before starting Farm Food, a personal chef service, in July 2014. I chose to be in business because I feel I can serve people better. Running my own business also gives me control over my working hours as I am a single mother. I am a personal chef, and each menu is personalized for each client. I plan menus based on the client's specific food preferences and needs. I do all of the grocery shopping and prepare meals in the client's kitchen. All meals are packaged and labeled with reheating instructions. I also do the clean-up after the meals are ready.

On average, I work between six to ten hours a day. I start my day by gathering all the cooking equipment needed as I use my pots and pans when working. I load the equipment along with cooler bags into my car and then proceed to buy the groceries needed for my client's menu and store them in the cooler bags. On reaching the client's home, I unload my car and start cooking. I spend around four to eight hours cooking at my client's home depending on whether it is a weekly or monthly meal service. Once the meals are cooked, packaged and labeled, I store the first few meals in the fridge and the rest in the freezer. I then clean up the kitchen, pack up my equipment and go home. Once back home, I put my equipment away and relax for a bit. I enjoy a meal and then go through any email and phone messages that come in for the day. Planning the menus and cooking the meals are the most enjoyable parts of my job.

As an entrepreneur, I am responsible for every aspect of my business that includes planning the menu, billing, customer service, marketing and my favorite part; cooking! I utilize my cooking, organizational and listening skills to perform at my job. The most important decisions I make on a daily basis are related to scheduling cooking days and meetings with clients, making time to focus on administrative details, and marketing the business.

I attribute my success to my parents. Both of them are self-employed. Growing up, my dad was a farmer, and my mom ran a Bed and Breakfast. My dad has had the most impact on my leadership style. He is pretty calm, easy-going, not overly forceful and likes to get things done.

Besides my business, I admire Tamsen Connects, an enterprise- run by Tamsen Taylor in Guelph, ON. Tamsen is dedicated to helping moms connect with local businesses to help them get access to needed services.

When I'm not working, I love to bake; especially cookies. I also enjoy reading, walking on a nearby nature trail and watching the Food Network. I also enjoy playing the piano and listening to music. I believe that nobody should go hungry, especially children. I sponsor a child through World Vision and donate to the Cambridge Self-Help Food Bank.
